Medicines have benefits and some have risks. Always read the label and use only as directed. If symptoms persist or you have side effects see your health professional. Brands and generics both contain the same active ingredient(s) and are medically equivalent. Some brands are marketed under different names by the same manufacturer depending on the country of origin. Images are provided as a reference only, the received medicine may vary in packaging, color, pill shape, etc, from one batch to the next. For an item marked "generic" any quality brand may be sent, however you will always receive the active ingredients ordered in the strength(s) ordered.
Bimatoprost is a prostamide medication originally designed to treat glaucoma and ocular hypertension by reducing intraocular pressure. It is now also used to thicken and lengthen eyelashes, as well as in various off-label uses.
The product is available in a 0.01% or 0.03% solution, which is applied to the eye with an eyedropper or with applicator to eyelashes. It is worth noting that doctor instructions should be followed carefully when bimatoprost is used for any purpose, as too much of the drug actually reduces effectiveness. Patients should buy bimatoprost in the strength prescribed; applying 3 doses of 0.01% solution is not the equivalent of applying one dose of 0.03% solution.
The medication is more commonly known by the brand name Lumigan for treating intraocular pressure, and Latisse as a cosmetic supplement. Many areas require a prescription to buy bimatoprost for any purpose.
Relieving Intraocular Pressure
When applied directly to the eye, the medication is thought to work by promoting outflow of fluid in the eyeball, thus relieving pressure. It may prevent glaucoma from developing when used early enough in patients with ocular hypertension.
Patients may be prescribed either 0.01% or 0.03% solution; the ideal dose can only be determined by a doctor, according to individual patient circumstances. The medication may be administered to one or both eyes, depending on the severity of the condition in each eye.
Drops are typically administered once per day, shortly before bed. Treatment may continue for as long as the medication is needed and is producing good results.
While many patients buy bimatoprost over other glaucoma treatments for its milder side effects, there is still a risk of adverse effects, including permanent pigmentation changes in the treated eye(s).
Cosmetic Use
Bimatoprost, usually under the brand name Latisse, is prescribed to patients whose eyelashes are uncommonly sparse, thin, brittle, and may lack pigmentation. The medication promotes lashes to grow in thicker, longer and darker.
To promote eyelash growth the 0.03% solution is usually the preferred choice. The medication is applied once per day with an applicator to the base of eyelashes on the upper eyelid. If treatment is stopped, the condition will most likely gradually reverse.
Off-Label uses
The medication shows some interesting potential as a hair regrowth therapy for the scalp. Studies also suggest it is effective at removing orbital fat (fat around the eye). Both of these conditions are likely to reverse if treatment is stopped.
Off-label uses are still largely experimental and there are no widely-accepted dosage & administration guidelines. For hair regrowth the medication is applied directly to the site; for orbital fat drops are administered in the eye.
Adverse Effects
As mentioned above, many patients buy bimatoprost for its much milder side effects compared to similar treatments. It is extremely unlikely to produce dangerous side effects. The medication is, however, somewhat notorious for producing cosmetic side effects, including:
Many of the above side effects are avoidable if care is taken during application and any misplaced medication is quickly rinsed off.
